A lot of effort obviously went into this. The PCB has 2 holes for the diodes, but the parts list specifies a 3 pin diode. With the knowledge and the tools available on this site I have built very modified boards.

You seem to know what you are doing as well as having a lot of experience. In the lm38886tf everything is equal to the circuit. I do believe a carefully planned lm using quality not expensive components with suitable source, volume control feeding decent speakers is difficult to beat.
