I found her to be selfish, unstable and felt that she brought a lot of her pain on herself. What an intriguing premise, Erika. Zelda wrote autobiographically, often exposing her own personality flaws and insecurities.
This is a story about Edna St Vincent Millay in the late ‘s and her relationship with a local dressmaker, a “fallen” woman who has had a child out of wedlock and is ostracized for it in the little town in the Berkshires Mass. I wanted to show how making judgments about people injects poison into communities, how frequently all is not what it seems, and how those who outspokenly oppose something that they see as corrosive are often battling aspects of the very behavior they denounce.
Robuck is an excellent writer, wi 4. She has been shunned by her community and is doing the best she can to support herself and daughter. The story begins ina time when family loyalty, responsibility and respect are the driving forces behind everyone’s choices. Congratulations on the release of your new book, Erika. I really enjoy how Robuck combines history and fiction, adding in characters she has created to the actual life events of her subjects. I also thank the author for the obvious amount of research that she did before writing this fascinating story. The former for an indiscretion, the latter for her hedonistic lifestyle. But I’m not one of them and I know we are not going Different books for different readers or as my mother says “different strokes for different folks”.
In order to preoccupy herself and not think of the lover who has left her, Millay focuses her attention on the local seamstress, Laura Kelley. What role does the statue of the Virgin play in the novel?
She won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry inthe third woman to win the prize for that honor. I was glad her parts of the book were short. I did not think I could rise to the challenge of this intensely dark, often savage, and deeply poetic erikz, and nearly abandoned the idea midway through writing the novel, in favor robbuck telling the entire story through my protagonist. Vincent Millay to life in all her beauty and insatiability.
She is shunned by most of the town when she has a baby out of wedlock. Both her parents are dead and so, at age nineteen, she is left to run their dress shop alone after her sister leaves to get married.
With the other main character, Vincent, boy I have to say I found myself feeling disgust, bewuty, sadness, and beaut some empathy. What I found most interesting about Millay and her husband was their belief that her experiences in life, love, lust, and pain were part of her vocation, and, therefore, worthy of being taken as far as she was willing to go.
I have mixed feelings when it comes to Vincent’s story.
She does justice to the poet. Jul 19, Andrea rated it really liked it. On the other hand, I adored Laura. A fictional creation, Laura Kelley, and a fictionalized creature, Edna St. As we travel through ten years in these two women’s lives, we are treated to heartache and love, growth and change.
She loved extravagant clothes, surrounding and exciting people. I was hooked from the first page to the last. But when I finished it, I was glad that I did beaufy. Laura is a talented seamstress and Millay wants her to create all of her outfits for her new book tour.
