I am indifferent about how I feel about this one.
I think the book would please more older people who have more life experience because for me it was hard to understand some decisions that were made in the story. Mar 01, Keefe rated it liked it. Here, yyoung young woman, hobbled by her own “”desperate inner call,”” obsessively cares for and loves a dying man, while hovering about is another lover–a lover whose normalcy she yearns for like sunlight.
Then there is also Gordon–who does gentleman carpentry rather than read Nietzsche, and who is “”normal”” and a friend, as well as a lover. The book is basically about the train wreck of their lives. I disliked it so much. Victor and Hilary’s attic rooms ring with gunfire, blows, and cries; an elderly blue-blood with lime hair and a highly symbolic maze on her estate, orchestrates socially; there’s dyinh nighttime toboggan ride and a prowl; and a decision to die involves a loyalty never imagined.
I’m like a broken fucking record. He does a much better job. I had to put it down several times, and I was in no rush to finish it.

Instead, she focuses on Hilary, a character who is not interesting or complex enough to justify the entire book being narrated by her. My first reaction after finishing the book was ‘wait a minute, what film did I just see?
You get to know them more in every single chapter you read, and you find yourself rooting for each of them. I literally feel like nothing happened.

KIRKUS REVIEW This young author’s first novel–celebrated pre-pub with a mega-advance and a film sale–offers the old-timey, sure-fire fascination of a fevered love story in which one partner is dying, and dying with flair. I really liked the premise of the book. If you’ve seen the movie, you’ve already read this book, but hey. A lot about ‘Dying Young’ as a film adaptation is about following the success of the mega hit. It was good, yes, but tough. The former was coming off the back of a decent success with grungy Seattle based relationship indie flick, ‘Singles’ but unfortunately for him, he was overshadowed by the music and the quirkier people around him.
Now I will order the book which I’m sure will answer most of my questions.
