By this time, more allegations against Alaina MacGaren mount tje she’s unjustly branded a spy, traitor and murderer by both the North and South. He believes her guise as Al and gives her a job at the hospital he works at in New Orleans. I kept waiting for Freddy Crueger to jump out from around the corner. I will have to read other KEW books in the future, and I wonder if there’s other civil war love stories out there. The beginning, and most, of the story takes place in Louisiana especially New Orleansand ends in Minnesota. Her characters are richly drawn. The tension then mellows out iin a loving care and giving on both their parts as they finally succumb to their passions.
She was an avid horse rider who at one time lived in kathlden large home on 55 acresm2 in Minnesota.

She died in a hospital on July 6, in Princeton, Minnesota, aged 68, ashess cancer. I remember the date because I had just come home from the hospital with my first born Michael, who finally tied the knot this month with his partner and has given me two beautiful granddaughters. Two beings wrapped in the pure bliss of their union, proceeding in ktahleen, uncaring haste, giving all to the other and in return finding everything and more.

I all but gulped and breathed it in voraciously, reading while eating, getting up during the night to see what would happen next, only to end up reading all night long, and sighed with satisfaction and gratification, in the afterglow of the end.

The first publisher on her list, Avon, quickly purchased the novel and arranged an initialprint run. I believe he said — ah, yes — here it is. Woodiwiss did a suburb job of developing this kahleen.
The first romance novel I ever read, and still the best.

Did it live up to the five stars I had given it back then? I originally read this as a young teen and loved it. It is a compelling tale of a young Southern woman from Louisiana who loses everything in the Civil War. I read it all, in 3 days.
The story offers a core mystery well wrapped in several others, katgleen of action, suspense, romantic moments though not as many love scenes as readers like me might hope thee, and a wonderfully satisfying ending. All this in a bodice ripper? When Roberta discovers Cole hails from a wealthy family from Minnesota, Roberta makes a play for Cole while “Al” persists in her enmity for all Yankees though it’s getting harder and harder to do in Cole’s case.
I don’t think I’ll read this book again.
